Recent (as of 3.7a-5758) work by Andreas Raab has extended the PNG to actually write as well as read PNG files.

This work comes with a full test suite, and can do Zlib compression, and handle transparency and different form depths.

It does not yet handle gamma, but this would not be hard to add.
