Moving as much of the VM functionality into the image is being pursued in the Squid project.

Bryce Kampjes is playing around with a dynamic compiler written in normal Smalltalk.

Does this mean you could fileout an 'image' for different platforms? Save to MacOS, Save to Win32, Save to Linux for example? 2002.12.31 Randall Bohn

Yes, the image would contain everything, except the dynamically compiled machine code. Just a simple Squeak loader/linker would be needed on each platform that included a mapping from bytecodes to machine codes and a bootstrap translator for generating the initial interpreter. ajh 2003.1.3
