I have gotten a white area at the bottom of the screen that I can type in, what is it
and how do I get rid of it?

That is the output console. You can go to the VM menu (outside window menu), VM Preferences -> Debug Output -> Show Output Console to toggle this.
The white area at the bottom of the screen is the output console. It is a menu option that is accessed from the frame of the Operating System Window in which Squeak is running. Blue click in the frame at the top of the window and a menu will appear; select VM Preferences -> Debug Output -> Show Output Console to toggle the Output Console window on and off.
