Bert F. asked in March 2017 on the ML:
Question
Is it fair to say that we can pretty much ignore environments in daily use? That we only create one if we need it?
Answer
The answer is: YES, it preserves the illusion of Smalltalk-80's original, simple, single Smalltalk environment.
If you only work within one environment, nothing should change visibly
(except for two new menu items in Monticello).
Dave L. noted:
Environments are invisible to those of us not working directly with Environments, and they appear to be very important for anyone who might want to make practical use of Environments.
