Back when the ICFP programming competition was going on, Ned Konz wrote a PPM (portable pixmap) reader/writer. This is a very simple, uncompressed image format that is probably more common in Unix systems. But if you want an alternative to GIF or BMP, it might work for you. PPMReadWriter-nk.cs
